I love your smiles !!! About harmony, psychotherapy and more

24.07.2020

It seems to me that sometimes psychotherapy doesn't work. No, I'll start from another angle ...

As a professional, I deal with eating disorders, so I meet absolutely different clients. Each woman and man (yes, men also suffer from ED!) has their own world of interests and habits, their own personality. Three women among them have marvelous smiles. They may be serious, exhausted, or upset during the session. And then suddenly, in a second, the whole face is changed, as if it is illuminated from within.

One of them has small, sharp teeth, like a squirrel. When she smiles or laughs, she changes completely and becomes even cuter.

Sometimes I think that psychotherapy doesn't work. It happens when a person comes and tells me about his or her (really!) terrible life. Things happen in it that shouldn't happen to anyone at all - absolute hell! After that I think: how can I help in this situation? A person lives in hell and destroys himself, tortures himself, trying to somehow cope with difficult emotions. And although it is hard for me too, I am there for him, not trying to "fix" such a martyr. I am listening. Containing what is possible. I sincerely respond with what I have. Sometimes miracles happen in this place. Sometimes comes the relief. And then the client and I can set a goal, and go towards this goal in small steps. You can’t go with big steps, because you can stumble on the way.

I really love it when therapy works and the quality of clients’ life changes! The first therapeutic aims are becoming a reality:

• comes a harmony with food;

• new job is found;

• relations are formed and strengthened ...

Last of all, there comes a harmony with the body. The attacks on the body are stopped, changing to care, and tenderness. Although everyone has relapses. For example, when you go into a fitting room with poor lighting while shopping. You look at yourself - omg, you definitely need to lose some weight! Then you cool down.

Sometimes I hear from my colleagues that I should not be strongly emotionally involved, otherwise I will not last for a long time. However, I am absolutely sure that when I stop sincerely getting involved in a therapy process, I, as a specialist, will need to be thrown into the trash and sent to do something else. For example, packing something in boxes :)
